Before
order despatched from seed grower
1 To
reduce the susceptibility of tubers to damage before grading/sizing
allow seed approximately 48 hours to reach a temperature of 8-10°C.
2
Curing seed after grading/sizing enables wound healing on tubers that
may have been damaged and thus preventing secondary infections entering
wounds. It is recommended that a period of 3 days with positive
ventilation at 8-10°C will help prevent any secondary infections.
3 If
order is to be graded in advance of intended pick up date, place seed
back into ventilated storage (preferably refrigerated) to help avoid
seed becoming chitted and condensation accumulating near the surface of
the bag/box.
4
Prior to seed being despatched from the farm ensure the temperature from
several tubers in the stock is known and recorded into the delivery
advice book. If seed is held in cold store allow the temperature of the
tubers to warm up to 8-10°C if the transport unit is non-refrigerated.
Seed
delivered to Ware grower
1
Clean out and sanitise storage before bringing in a new seed stock.
2
Customers should assess seed when it arrives on farm to ensure they are
happy with the quality and that the correct sizes, splits and treatments
have been delivered. It is recommended that the potatoes are emptied out
of bags (with care to minimise damage) and into boxes/crates. If seed
is not due to be planted for several weeks, try and isolate seed in a
well ventilated shed away from any other stocks, particularly ware, and
use boxes/crates that are known not to have come into contact with
fungicides or sprout suppressants.
3
Monitor temperatures (2.5 – 4°C. if in cold store) and humidity
(Relative humidity should be 95%) on a regular basis whilst crop is in
store. Avoid fluctuating temperatures.
4
Ensure soil temperature is above 8°C. before planting and the difference
between soil and tuber temperature is no more than 2°C
